The Silk Roads
(A New History of the World)
by Peter Frankopan 2015

In a changing world it is helpful to put current events into an historical context, this book changed the way I think about the world and my thoughts about the future.
The history I learned at school was very Euro centric. This books emphasises the importance and enduring nature of the old trade routes which converge on the Middle East. Until perhaps the 16th century Europe was very much a side show .The Mongul hoards largely left Northern Europe untouched because there was not much of interest here . The book puts into context modern day conflicts in the Middle East by reviewing US and British foreign policy in the 20th and 21st centuries and much of this makes uncomfortable reading. The book points to the increasing wealth of the states along the old silk routes and of China itself and suggests that perhaps Western influence is very much on the wane.
